No, a trend is based on velocity, not absolute volume. A topic ranks high when the frequency of its mentions grows rapidly compared with the previous period. A topic with 5 mentions that has doubled in the latest period will rank higher than one with a steady 50 mentions. This surfaces a genuinely new, developing narrative.
